US President Donald Trump said he might “have to start liking” his former political rival Hillary Clinton after she suggested she would nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully brokered a deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with American journalist Bret Baier aboard Air Force One. Baier pointed to Clinton’s remarks that she would nominate Trump if he managed to end the conflict without yielding to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Well, that was very nice,” Trump said. “I may have to start liking her again.”
CLINTON PROPOSES NOBEL NOMINATION
Hillary Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, said on the “Raging Moderates” podcast that she would nominate Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he brought an end to the war in Ukraine while keeping Ukrainian territory intact.
“Honestly, if he could bring about the end to this terrible war, if he could end it without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory to the aggressor, could really stand up to Putin, something we haven’t seen, but maybe this is the opportunity if President Trump were the architect of that, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,” Clinton said.
She added, “Because my goal here is to not allow capitulation to Putin.”
TRUMP-PUTIN MEETING UNDERWAY IN ALASKA
Clinton’s comments came as Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for landmark talks aimed at ending the three-year conflict in Ukraine.
Trump, speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One on Friday, declared he wanted a ceasefire “today,” vowing he “won’t be happy” with anything less as he set off for the Cold War-era airbase where history may be made.
Trump and Clinton have a long history of rivalry. During the 2016 campaign, Clinton called Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables” and said he was “not just unprepared – he’s temperamentally unfit” to be president. She also criticised Trump’s past praise of Putin, years before Russia’s invasion of Ukraian.
