Telangana police have arrested nine members of an interstate gang that sedated cattle, stole them, and sold the meat in Maharashtra border areas.

The gang, active for several months in Nirmal district and neighbouring regions in Telangana, was led by Syed Sohel from Nanded, who had nearly 40 members under him.

Police said the gang used sedative injections, supplied by Khalid from Bhainsa, to capture cows and bulls. They then transported the animals in modified Innovas and Boleros with rear seats removed, slaughtered them, and sold the meat illegally. A large garage in Nanded was allegedly used for modifying vehicles for the illegal trade.

The gang’s activities came to light when they attempted to steal cattle in Mudhol. CCTV footage helped police identify one accused, who was arrested.

A special team, led by Bhainsa ASP Avinash Kumar, IPS, was formed to nab the others. When the gang fled to Ajmer, Rajasthan, the police team, coordinating with Rajasthan Police, caught seven members near Ajmer Dargah.

Two more were arrested locally in Bhainsa, while Raju from Nanded and Tayub from Bhainsa remain absconding.

Police seized a Mahindra XUV500, a Dzire car, eight mobile phones, and 39,280 in cash. The accused were allegedly involved in multiple cattle thefts in Nirmal and Mudhol, causing heavy losses to farmers.

SP G Janaki Sharmila, IPS, warned that illegal cattle transport is a criminal offence and assured strict legal action against offenders. “Public cooperation is essential. If you see any illegal cattle transport, call 100 or your local police station. Your identity will be kept confidential,” she said.

The SP also praised the efforts of Bhainsa ASP Avinash Kumar, IPS; Nirmal ASP Rajesh Meena, IPS, and other officers for their role in cracking the case.
