It was predicted in this column that the Hindi version of Coolie will open in Rs. 7-9 crores. Even though the film was seeing a limited release in the Hindi belt, immense hype around it as well as the fact that the original Tamil version was all set to embark on a record start suggested that even Hindi version would not just open huge but also have an outside chance of hitting that double digit mark.

However, the opening was decent enough as Rs. 4.50 crores came in. This is in fact lesser than Rajinikanth’s own Kabali which had released way back in 2016 and its Hindi version had collected Rs. 5.60 crores. This shows the magnitude of curiosity that the film had managed to create amongst audiences back then when social media presence was not even 10% of what it’s today, ticket prices were much lower and the release much thinner today. It was a regular working day release and still had opened so well.

On the other hand, Coolie is an event film arriving at the start of the extended four-day weekend due to Independence Day holiday. Yes, it could have been better had it arrived solo since War 2 took away maximum screens and shows. That’s why, in the original Tamil version the film has taken a blockbuster start. It has comfortably crossed Rs. 50 crores mark there which makes it the biggest ever in Tamil version. With all languages combined together, the collections have gone past the Rs. 60 crores mark, which is excellent. Though in south, films typically drop in a major way on the second day, Independence Day holiday means that this would be cushioned and one can expect another Rs. 50 crores+ day across all languages.
