The 2023 Gujarati supernatural thriller Vash emerged as a significant success for Gujarati cinema, performing strongly at the box office and winning the National Award for Best Gujarati Film. Its engaging story and performances resonated with audiences, leading to a Hindi remake, Shaitaan, directed by Vikas Bahl and featuring R. Madhavan in the antagonist’s role originally played by Hiten Kumar.
Vash actor Hiten Kumar opens up on finally watching Shaitaan; says, “Madhavan’s version felt more designed and polished”
Starring Hiten Kumar alongside Janki Bodiwala, Hitu Kanodia, Monal Gajjar, Chetan Daiya, and Prem Gadhavi, the second instalment of the film, titled Vash Vivash in Hindi, continues the supernatural saga of the first part. The story follows an ordinary family once again caught in the web of a mysterious figure with dangerous powers. This chapter promises more tension, higher emotional stakes, and fresh twists, building on the success of Vash. Produced by A Big Box Series and written and directed by Krishnadev Yagnik, Vash Vivash is set for theatrical release on August 27. Hiten shared that he waited over a year before watching Shaitaan, the Hindi remake, to avoid comparing performances, and when he finally did, he found the interpretation to be markedly different.
He said, “Madhavan is one of my favourite actors. When I saw the Shaitaan trailer, I realised his characterisation was very different from what I had done as Pratap in Vash. He was more physical and delivered his lines in a distinct style, while my portrayal relied on pauses, silence, and the power of the eyes, with minimal movement. Initially, I avoided watching Shaitaan for over a year, fearing I would compare our performances and be partial to mine. But on a flight to the UK last month, I finally saw it. His version felt more designed and polished, while the rawness of Vash was, in my opinion, its magic. The story and character were the same, but the portrayals were worlds apart. I’m glad Shaitaan was a huge success, and I’m especially happy for Janki Bodiwala, who reprised her role in Hindi. Back during the shoot of part one, I had told the media she would be an asset to Gujarati cinema, and she proved me right. Every actor has their own way of approaching a role, and Madhavan is truly one of the best.”
Vash Vivash, produced by A Big Box Series and written and directed by Krishnadev Yagnik, is set to release in theatres across India on August 27, 2025.
