Union minister and former Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumder has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to recommend renaming Sealdah station as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Junction.
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Majumder highlighted delays in several railway projects across the state due to land acquisition issues. “Many railway projects in West Bengal are stuck simply because of land problems. We are not getting land in several places,” he said.
He appealed to keep politics aside after elections for the sake of development. “Politics should exist until election day, but after the election, put the politics in the deep freezer inside the refrigerator at your home. Once the election is over, we should move forward with only the mantra of development,” Majumder said.
Requesting Banerjee’s cooperation, he added, “From this stage, I am requesting the Chief Minister of this state with folded hands to please help the railways by providing land wherever railway projects in the state are stuck due to lack of land.”
Linking the proposal to the station’s historical significance, Majumder noted, “The name of any particular railway station depends on the recommendation of the concerned state. So, I am appealing to the honourable Chief Minister to recommend that Sealdah station — which was once a shelter for refugees — be named after late Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who helped create West Bengal once.”
