A major rail accident occurred near Chandil Junction station of the Adra Railway Division on Saturday morning. Around 4 am, a goods train loaded with iron, travelling from Tatanagar to Purulia, derailed after crossing Chandil station. Its coaches collided with another goods train coming from the opposite direction, causing several coaches of the second train to also derail.
The collision took place between Pitki railway gate and Chandil station, severely damaging the tracks and bringing train operations to a complete halt. Railway officials and rescue teams rushed to the spot upon receiving information and began restoration and rescue work.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, eyewitnesses noted that if a passenger train had been on the route at the time, the consequences could have been far more severe.
Due to the accident, 12 trains have been cancelled and 15 others diverted. Restoration of the damaged railway tracks is currently underway.
