American actor, musician and poet, Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s untimely death on July 20, 2025, came as a shock to many. The 54-year-old actor passed away after drowning during a family vacation in Costa Rica. The actor, who rose to fame with the 1984 sitcom, The Cosby Show, was hailed for his outstanding performances. Now, Malcolm’s mother spoke about his final moments before his tragic death.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother revealed his final moments before his death
On the actor’s recently launched Instagram account, ‘Malcolm-Jamal Warner Living Legacy’, his mother, Pamela, shared the final moments that transitioned before his death. Revealing that the actor did not suffer, she wrote:
“For those of you who are at a loss, pained by the suddenness of his departure, ache for his presence or just to hear his voice one more time, to see his beatific smile one more time, be comforted that he was at peace and more importantly, he did not suffer.”
Malcolm-Jamal’s mother revealed his love for his wife and daughter
In the same post, she mentioned that Malcolm was way more than just an actor. As per her, he was in immense love with his wife and daughter. She also heaped praises on him for being her teacher, coach and business partner. Pamela also revealed that Malcolm’s father was very proud of his achievements. She also emphasised his love for acting and that he always studied the craft to hone his skills.
What led to Malcolm-Jamal’s death?
Malcolm-Jamal Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica when the incident took place. He was playing with his daughter at the seashore and later entered the sea. At that moment, the current swept him away. As per a report in PEOPLE:
“Mr. Warner was unable to get out and was pulled out by several people on the beach. He received care from Red Cross officials, but was pronounced dead at the scene.”

According to ABC News, the Costa Rican National Police revealed that the official cause of Malcolm’s death was asphyxia. For the unversed, asphyxia is a condition where the body doesn’t get enough oxygen to function properly. The actor was caught up by the current, and the bystanders rescued him and carried him to the shore. However, he was declared dead.
Born on August 18, 1970, Malcolm made his first appearance on television in the series, Matt Houston in 1982 and also appeared in Fame the following year. Best known for his iconic role as ‘Theo Huxtable’ on the 1984 American sitcom The Cosby Show, he made a lasting mark on television history. His performance earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He was last seen in the Fox medical drama, The Resident and was a part of the show for five seasons.
Malcolm is survived by a wife and daughter, whose identities he had kept private.
