Condensing the best hyaluronic acid skincare products into a single list is a nearly impossible task. Why? As Dr. Sherene Idriss previously told Vogue, “Because of the popularity of hyaluronic acid, it is in almost every other product you’ll find.” The universal appeal of hyaluronic acid makes it effortless to incorporate into your daily routine (though chances are you may have it hiding in plane sight in your regimen already).
While most of us are familiar with the term, you may still wonder: what exactly is this superstar ingredient? According to Dr. David Shafer, MD, FACS, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that plays a crucial role in maintaining your skin’s moisture balance. Translations? It keeps skin hydrated by drawing water into the epidermis, resulting in a plump, youthful appearance. But HA isn’t just about hydration—it works in harmony with other ingredients like peptides, ceramides, niacinamide, and even vitamin C, amplifying the benefits of your entire skin-care routine.
Whether you’re battling dryness, fine lines, or simply want a dewy glow, hyaluronic acid can help. It’s a versatile ingredient that suits all skin types, including sensitive skin. Plus, its anti-aging properties make it a favorite for more mature skin types seeking smoother, firmer skin.

Before you go hyaluronic acid wild, Dr. Idriss reminds us to be intentional with our product choices. Rather than layering multiple HA products, she recommends limiting yourself to just one or two in your skin-care routine to avoid irritation.
So, where to begin? To save you from sifting through an overwhelming sea of options, we’ve enlisted experts—and a few Vogue editors—to share their top hyaluronic acid skincare picks.

The formulation features multiple types of hyaluronic acid, including sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, which work together to deeply hydrate and penetrate all layers of the skin. “This formula also includes ceramides and niacinamide—two nourishing ingredients that are crucial for proper skin-barrier function. This blend of ingredients helps to soothe, hydrate, and nourish the skin.”
- Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nicole Ruth calls this pick a “minimalist serum” and a go-to for patients seeking that coveted dewy, luminous glow. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, also a fan of the line (and member of Rhode’s advisory board), gravitates toward this serum when he’s after intense hydration with a weightless, non-greasy feel. It’s no surprise that the serum has earned its place as a favorite among Vogue’s beauty shopping duo Kiana Murden and Conçetta Ciarlo, too—though Ciarlo notes her latest obsession is the brand’s newly launched Glazing Mist, for hydration on the go.

Everything You Need To Know
Benefits of Using Hyaluronic Acid Skincare
Since hyaluronic acid is a humectant, the powerhouse ingredient is superb at “hydrating, plumping and smoothing its appearance,” says Toronto-based board-certified dermatologist Geeta Yadav, MD. That can make it helpful not only if you have dryness, but also for those looking to soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles—as dehydrated skin looks less supple, and can exaggerate their appearance.
What are the different types of hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid isn’t one size fits all—in fact, they come in different molecular sizes and weights. Dr. Yadav breaks down the two different types to know: “Smaller molecules are able to penetrate the skin more deeply than larger molecules.” On the other hand, larger sizes remain on the skin’s surface level, offering more immediate (though temporary) plumping. Meanwhile, mixed molecular weight provides more comprehensive hydration.
How many hyaluronic acid skincare products should you use?
Dr. Idriss recommends limiting hyaluronic acid products in your routine and keeping the ingredient to one to two products max to avoid irritation. “You don’t need it in every step of your routine and you especially don’t need a dedicated single-ingredient HA serum,” she previously told Vogue.
Can you overdo it with hyaluronic acid?
As the experts note, there’s truth in the notion of everything in moderation. “At the very least, excessive use of hyaluronic acid will not provide any additional benefit beyond what normal use can provide; your skin can only tolerate so much of an active ingredient,” says Dr. Camp, noting that layering too many active ingredients can lead to irritation.
Board certified nurse practitioner Vanessa Coppola agrees, reminding us that barrier support should be intentional, not overdone—so don’t layer on barrier boosting products endlessly. “People assume that because hyaluronic acid is hydrating, it’s safe to layer on endlessly,” Coppola tells Vogue. “Hyaluronic acid it’s a humectant, but if there’s not enough ambient moisture (like in dry climates or indoor AC/heat), it can actually pull water out of your skin, leaving it tight, and irritated.”
