A long period of dormancy for Converse is set to end with the official release date for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s first signature sneaker.

The Converse Shai 001 “Butter” will formally kick off a new era for the 117-year-old brand, as SGA is the first basketball player to get a signature model since Elton Brand’s Converse EB 3 dropped in 2010. Gilgeous-Alexander designed both the silhouette and his logo himself, taking his level of involvement well above what’s usually expected from pro hoopers. He’s also been wearing unreleased sneaker since February and showcased it while winning his first NBA title, as well as regular and Final’s MVP awards.

A molded unibody upper features a zippered shroud, beneath which sits an inner-bootie with a ghillie lacing system. It’s intended to be zipped up during play and worn open off the court. It sits above a midsole borrowing a forefoot Zoom Air unit from Nike, beneath which a radial traction pattern defines the outsole.

“I poured my heart and soul into the Shai 001, and I’m proud to share it with the world,” Gilgeous-Alexander said in a release upon the shoe’s initial announcement. “From performance to design, every aspect of this shoe reflects my passion for the game and my commitment to pushing its boundaries. We made the Shai 001 a versatile shoe for everyone — from the athlete who’s in the gym three times a day to the kids who just want to express themselves on or off the court.”

Taking clear inspiration from Timberland’s iconic “Wheat” boot, the “Butter” launch colorway creates a monochrome look that all subsequent editions will follow. Throughout the regular season and playoffs, SGA also wore “Masi Blue,” “Ares Grey,” “Hail Clay” and “Charm Black” editions — the latter of which is a nod to his mother and her love for the color.

Upon winning the NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar was given a one-of-one metallic “Trophy Gold” variant. A limited run of the Shai 001 “Butter” was then made available to purchase exclusively in Oklahoma City immediately after the championship parade.

“We gave Shai creative control over the design of the shoe in a way only Converse can,” Jared Carver, Converse chief executive officer and president, said in February. “Then we went to work leveraging the resources of Converse and all the innovation of Nike Inc. to proudly deliver the Shai 001. Converse invented the first basketball shoe, and we have been there for so many of the sport’s beloved moments over the last hundred years. We are confident the Shai 001 will help inspire and inform the next wave of basketball footwear and return Converse to its rightful place at the heart of the game.”

The Converse Shai 001 “Butter” will release Sept. 4 through Converse’s website and the Snkrs app, as well as retailers including Kith and Undefeated. Pricing is set at $130.
