In an era dominated by edgy Gen-Z lingo and explicit dialogues, the creators of the romance drama Saiyaara took a refreshingly bold detour — by keeping things clean. Writers Sankalp Sadanah and dialogue writer Rohan Shankar recently opened up in an exclusive conversation with veteran film critic Komal Nahta, explaining their conscious choice to avoid profanity and trendy slang in a film meant for the youth.
Saiyaara writers reveal why they ditched slang and abuse in the dialogues: “From Anand to DDLJ, we have been doing it and still people watch and love those films”
“Sir, I mean, once or twice, I think there were a few words on the shoot,” shared Shankar candidly, “but later we decided that we don’t need it. Because at the end of the day, our film will travel, and it’s a family film. It will travel everywhere.”
Saiyaara, despite its modern aesthetics and youthful leads, opted for a language that transcends geography and generations. The writers believe that raw emotion doesn’t always need to be spelled out with expletives — it can be felt through powerful acting, strong writing, and impactful music. “If that abuse will give an emotion, so what’s the problem if it comes without an abuse?” Shankar asked rhetorically. “It can come from the expression; it can come from the music.”
He further elaborated on it, referring to the golden era of storytelling, “We have been doing it for so many years — from Anand to DDLJ, we have been doing it. There is nothing anywhere. Still, if you watch those films, you like it.”
This creative decision by the makers of Saiyaara is a nod to a more universal style of storytelling — one that doesn’t rely on shock value but instead chooses relatability and emotional resonance.
With audiences across age groups becoming increasingly discerning, Saiyaara’s choice to speak the language of feeling over fad might just set a new trend in contemporary Bollywood romances. Whether the Gen-Z crowd embraces it remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear — the heart of Saiyaara beats clean, strong, and loud.
