He is Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande’s go-to hair wizard and the man behind their flawless locks. However, his journey in the industry has been anything but easy. In a recent interview, he opened up about his struggles with mental health and sexuality.
Chris Appleton recalls feeling suicidal before coming out to his wife
Chris Appleton sat for a candid conversation with Jay Shetty on his podcast On Purpose. Chris has two children, Billy and Kitty-blu, who are now 22 and 20, respectively, with his ex-partner, Katie Katon. While the duo decided to part ways when Chris came to terms with his sexuality, it had not been an easy ride. He revealed that he was so confused and depressed that at one point in time he even considered taking his own life because he thought it would be ‘better for them (his kids) to have a dad that was dead than a dad that was gay’.
Chris Appleton didn’t want to be gay
In the same conversation with Jay Shetty, Chris Appleton revealed that he didn’t want to be gay. He shared that he was together with Katie Katon for nine years, and those were some of the best years of his life. However, once he came to terms with his sexuality, it all came crashing down. Chris admitted that he really loved Katie and didn’t want to be a different man.
Chris Appleton felt like he had failed his children
In the same conversation, Chris Appleton revealed that he felt like he had ‘messed up’ his children’s lives by coming out. He added that it was his job to protect them, and he would have protected them from anything and anyone. However, this time he was the one who was hurting them.
“My job as a dad was to protect my kids. I just didn’t want them to ever have that shame put onto them. In a way, it felt like a disease; it felt like cancer, and I wanted to cut it out. Like, ‘If I could just get rid of that, then I could be a good dad.'”
Chris Appleton tried to take his own life
Chris Appleton revealed that it was that shame that led him to attempt to take his own life. He added that he was so ashamed of his own sexuality that he took the horrifying step. Thankfully, he survived, and it became a turning point for his sexuality. He decided to surrender to who he was. While he had no idea who this new Chris was, he navigated his way and now leads a happily married life with YOU star, Lukas Gage. He was quoted as saying:
“And so I brought some painkillers, I brought a bottle of alcohol, and I checked myself into a hotel. I took the tablets and drank the alcohol. I rang Kate and I apologised for the pain that I’d caused.”
