A woman officer from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), currently posted in Jammu and Kashmir, has alleged police inaction in a theft case filed by her family in Tamil Nadu, leading her to break down on camera.

The video, widely shared on social media, shows the officer, 32-year-old Kalavathi, tearfully narrating how jewellery kept aside for her wedding was stolen, and how no timely action was taken by the local police.

Kalavathi said the burglary took place at her family home in Narayanapuram village near Ponnai on June 24. At the time, her father and brother were away working on the farm while her mother had gone to graze cattle.

“The lock was broken and all the jewels which I had kept for my wedding were stolen. When she returned by 5.30 pm the lock was broken and the jewels were stolen. My mother and father were crying when my brother returned. Seeing this he filed a complaint on 24th June but no one came to investigate claiming there was Chief Minister’s security duty on 25th June. Only later finger print was collected and FIR filed on June 28,” said Kalavathi in the video.

She said the family was devastated, having lost everything they had saved for her marriage, and claimed that despite repeated efforts to reach the police, there had been little follow-up from their end.

The video was shared by BJP leader K Annamalai on X. “What kind of governance forces a woman in uniform to beg for justice online while wearing the nation’s flag on her shoulder? This is not just lawlessness, it’s the DMK’s model of governance, where criminals roam free and the protectors of our nation plead for help,” Annamalai wrote.

In response, the Vellore District Police issued a statement saying that Kalavathi’s father Kumarasamy had filed a complaint on June 24 about a theft at his residence. According to his complaint, 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Rs 50,000 in cash, and a silk saree kept aside for Kalavathi’s wedding were stolen.

The police said a case was registered on June 25 under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, and that fingerprint samples and CCTV footage were collected.

They also used tower dump technology to retrieve suspects’ cellphone call data records (CDRs). On June 29, the complainant reportedly revised his statement to say that the stolen jewellery weighed 22.5 sovereigns.

The police further stated that Kumarasamy had raised suspicion against Santosh, who was earlier married to Kalavathi and later divorced. They asserted that the investigation was ongoing without delay and rejected Kalavathi’s claim that there was a delay in filing the FIR.
