Carrie Underwood surprised her fans on Monday night (August 4) by revealing she’s returned to her natural hair color for the first time in 30 years.

The American Idol judge took to Instagram to show off her dramatic transformation, writing, “Well, the last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old, but I thought it might be time to give it a second chance. Thanks, @hairbykatelin_ at @parlour3beauty for helping me get back to my roots! #NewOldMe #Bronde.”

Underwood shared two photos and a video of her new hairstyle, revealing she’s traded her famous blonde locks for a more natural brunette color, though there are still a few golden highlights.

The country music star has toyed with changing her hair color in the past, but was worried about what people would think. “I’d love to do a little more with hair color. I’ve always been blond!” she told Refinery 29 in 2012. “The problem is, I don’t want to shock people, like if I dyed my hair brown, I don’t want people to think I’m turning dark and serious.”

“I wish I had started changing my hair around in the beginning,” she continued, “then it wouldn’t be such a big shock if I did something like that now.”

Underwood changed up her hairstyle slightly in 2016, removing her hair extensions. She said she made the change for the benefit of her children, Isaiah (now 10) and Jacob (now 6), whom she shares with husband Mike Fisher.

“Cutting my hair was a ‘mom’ move,” she explained to Elle. “I could spend half an hour to blow it dry and have it be super long, or I could spend that time playing with my son, and I’d much rather do the latter.”

Fans and friends jumped into the comments of Underwood’s latest Instagram post to compliment her new look, including actress Candace Cameron Bure, who wrote, “So pretty!!!!”
