Cinemaphiles may scoff at this next statement, but sometimes (often), I enjoy watching movies purely for the visuals—meaning, I could care less about the actual plot, character development, or big, climactic ending. Can’t a movie just be fun to look at? Not everything needs to be as masterfully-written as Citizen Kane or The Godfather. Specifically, I love seeing the unsung fashion in B-movies. Films that were critically-panned at the time, but feature a killer wardrobe nonetheless. For instance: 20 years ago today, one such feature film—Supercross—made its debut on the big screen; I still find its edgy racing style compelling today.
Should you care about the actual plot, I will give you the abbreviated version: Following the suspicious death of their father, brothers K.C. (Steve Howey) and Trip (Mike Vogel) encourage each other to get back on their bikes, and take part in the Las Vegas Motocross Championships. There’s good ol’ fashioned sibling rivalry, camaraderie, and plenty of high-paced vroom-vroom bike racing scenes. But for me, I have long watched the movie purely for the fashions alone. The moto outfits, brought to life by costume designer Elaine Montalvo, completely steal the show.
