A man was found in a critical condition in a forest in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly after he was allegedly assaulted by his wife and her brothers, who then tried to bury him alive. The incident took place on the night of July 21 in the Izzatnagar police station area.
The victim, Rajiv, was attacked at his home by a group of 11 people, including his wife Sadhana and her five brothers, identified as Bhagwan Das, Premraj, Harish, Laxman and one other.
Rajiv told police that the group broke into his house at night, beat him severely with iron rods and sticks, and broke both his legs and one arm.
According to the complaint, the attackers then took him to a forest in the CB Ganj area and dug a pit to bury him. Before they could bury him alive, an unknown person arrived at the spot, forcing them to flee.
The bystander later called an ambulance and helped shift Rajiv to a private hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Rajiv claimed that this was not the first attempt on his life. He alleged that his wife had previously tried to poison him and once mixed crushed glass in his food. He said he had informed her family, but no action was taken.
“My wife has tried to kill me multiple times before. She mixed poison in my food once and ground glass another time. I caught it and told her family, but they didn’t believe me. She wants a divorce and we have had disputes, but I didn’t know she’d plan to kill me with her brothers,” Rajiv said.
The couple has been married since 2009 and have two sons, aged 14 and 8. The couple’s 14-year-old son also corroborated these claims and said that his mother frequently fought with his father and had previously tried to poison him.
“My parents often fought. My mother has tried to kill my father before. That night, my maternal uncles and others came, beat my father and took him away in a vehicle. I saw her mix poison in his food once when I was younger, but I did not fully understand then,” the son said.
Rajiv works as a personal assistant to a doctor at a private hospital in Bareilly. He said he had moved into a rented house in the city because his wife did not want to stay in their village.
Following the incident, Rajiv’s father Netram filed a complaint. A FIR has been filed at Izzatnagar police station against Sadhana and her brothers, accusing them of attempting to murder Rajiv.
