What do you remember the most about this project?
Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat was a film I shot in what I feel are some of the most scenic and beautiful countries in Europe. That’s how I visualized the film. I wanted to shoot it in beautiful places—and to me, Switzerland is breathtaking. So is Scotland, which remains slightly unexploited and even underrated. It has stunning views—lakes, hills, mountains, and the gorgeous countryside. And a lot of sheep! It reminded me of New Zealand in some ways. Not too many people, very rainy and coastal, and the locals were incredibly warm and hospitable.

So special on many counts?
It was a very fulfilling experience. I introduced Arjun Rampal and Kirti Reddy in that film, so it holds a special place in my heart for launching them. Arjun was a friend of mine, and I’ve always felt he’s a very fine actor. That added to the overall joy of making the film.
And of course, Viju Shah’s music?
Yes, I believe we created a beautiful soundtrack—something quite different from the usual music you and I have worked on in the past. His style was unique, and we were both attempting something experimental. Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat was also the first romantic film of my career. I don’t think I’ll ever do another. That was my first and probably last foray into romance.
Why wouldn’t you do another romantic film?
I’m not a very romantic kind of director. So for me, attempting a film in that genre made it all the more special. I also remember that the film was shot entirely from start to finish without interruption. We were constantly moving across countries. I can’t recall which came first—Scotland or Switzerland. I think maybe it was Switzerland. But yes, the film had a very unique storyline, and the journey through those locations was a huge part of the experience.
This was my first review on a national platform.
That’s lovely to hear. Personally, it’s a special film for me too. I shot the entire film abroad. I had done Vishwatma mostly outside India as well, but this one was entirely an outdoor shoot. Even the sequences that look like they were shot in India were actually filmed in Scotland. In the end, I was quite satisfied with the way the film turned out. It was a great experience shooting in foreign lands and capturing locations that hadn’t been seen on screen before. If you watch the film, you’ll notice many of the backdrops are pristine and untouched—almost virginal. That was a key element for me: the locations, the cinematography, the songs, and the overall mood were all meant to transport the viewer.
