NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday intensified its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referred to Rahul Gandhi’s 2018 accusations against industrialist Anil Ambani, who is currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a loan fraud case.Congress MP Manickam Tagore took to X and pointed to Rahul Gandhi’s past allegations, where he accused PM Modi and Anil Ambani of orchestrating a “Rs 1,30,000 crore surgical strike on Indian defence forces.”“In 2018, my leader warned the nation: ‘The PM and Anil Ambani jointly carried out a Rs 1,30,000 crore surgical strike on Indian defence forces… You betrayed India’s soul.’ Many laughed. Few believed,” Tagore said. “ED has now summoned Anil Ambani in a Rs 17,000 crore loan fraud case, days after raids on his premises. The same Anil Ambani whose debt-ridden firm was picked for the Rafale offset deal — replacing HAL. Will Modi answer now?” he added. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Ambani Ambani to appear before its Delhi headquarters on August 5. His statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), according to agency sources. The summons comes amid an ongoing ED probe into allegations of bribery and issuance of unsecured loans linked to the industrialist.Meanwhile, the ED is also conducting searches in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata in connection with a fake bank guarantee racket. The agency filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) based on a case registered by Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing on November 11, 2024.Earlier, the agency carried out coordinated raids in connection with financial irregularities and alleged diversion of over Rs 10,000 crore in loans by various group companies associated with Ambani.According to ED sources, the investigation primarily revolves around the alleged diversion of approximately Rs 3,000 crore in loans extended by Yes Bank to Ambani’s companies between 2017 and 2019.Officials said searches covered more than 35 locations in Mumbai, spanning 50 companies and 25 individuals. A Delhi-based ED unit is leading the investigation under the PMLA.
