NEW DELHI: Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha J P Nadda on Thursday accused the Opposition parties of displaying double standards by staging a walkout as home minister Amit Shah started replying to the Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha, and insisting that the reply come from the Prime Minister. Nadda cited the precedent from UPA govt, when a discussion on the home ministry’s statement on 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai was replied to by the then prime minister and home minister in Lok Sabha and the then home minister in Rajya Sabha.Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, however, said the opposition had not walked out against Shah’s replying to the debate but to protest his specific remark that ‘main akela hi apko nipat lunga’ (I can handle you myself)’. “He insulted all of us, and we protested against that,” said Kharge.“We said the Prime Minister is here, please call him to the House…,” he noted.Earlier, Nadda sought to remind the Opposition that the Chair had made it clear during the business advisory committee (BAC) meeting and in the House that it is the prerogative of the govt to decide which minister should speak and reply to the discussion in the House.“The oppn parties had demanded for discussion and to elicit information on Operation Sindoor . However, when the opportunity came, they chose to walk out (in RS) without listening to the reply by the home minister. Their demand yesterday was clearly misplaced and it displays their double standards, given the precedent,” said Nadda. The House was adjourned soon after amid uproar by the opposition parties. The scene was no different post-recess, as the opposition resumed their protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar and demanded that the prime minister come to the House.Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said the prime minister had already replied to the debate in Lok Sabha for 1 hour and 42 minutes on Tuesday.“He presented all the facts to the nation through the House. The home minister is capable of replying to the debate…,” Rijiju said.He said the government has a collective responsibility, and the Opposition does not get to decide who will speak. With the opposition members continuing to protest, the House was adjourned first till 4.30 pm and then after commerce minister Piyush Goyal made a suo motu statement on the US tariff announcement, asserting that India will take all steps necessary to protect its national interest.
