IIM Mumbai has formally submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra Government to set up a new satellite campus in or around the city.

The proposal, which is under review by the Department of Higher and Technical Education, outlines IIM Mumbai’s vision to contribute towards the state’s ‘Viksit Maharashtra 2047’ mission.

The new campus aims to elevate Mumbai’s global standing in finance, policy, and digital innovation, while boosting India’s knowledge economy.

    INTERDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION WITH INDUSTRY INTEGRATION

The proposed campus will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in emerging fields such as economics, accounting and finance, technology and data science, and law and regulation.

This academic design is closely aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes innovation, flexibility, and interdisciplinary learning in higher education.

The initiative will also foster research that responds to industry needs and policy challenges in real time.

PROXIMITY TO REGULATORY BODIES A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE

IIM Mumbai’s plan envisions the new campus being situated near India’s key financial regulatory institutions, including RBI, SEBI, BSE, and NSE. The location will give students direct access to policymaking, market movements, and institutional frameworks.

Professor Manoj K Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai, said, “The proximity to regulators and key institutions will provide students with unmatched exposure and engagement with live policy, innovation, and industry frameworks, essential for shaping leadership for the future.”

The initiative is expected to create a vibrant academic-industry ecosystem, attracting policymakers, investors, and scholars from around the world.

    STATE GOVERNMENT BACKS TRANSFORMATIONAL VISION

According to Shailendra Deolankar, Director of Higher Education, the proposal is being evaluated as part of broader educational reforms.

He confirmed that consultations are underway with academicians, industry leaders, and public stakeholders to ensure the proposal aligns with inclusive and future-ready educational policies.

The proposal includes a detailed financial and infrastructure roadmap to support execution and long-term sustainability.

BUILDING A GLOBAL EDUCATION HUB IN MUMBAI

Describing the initiative as a milestone, IIM Mumbai noted: “It stands poised to make Mumbai not just the financial capital of India, but also a premier destination for transformative, world-class education.”

The satellite campus is expected to become a talent hub for digital finance, regulation, and economic governance, contributing to India’s vision of a knowledge-driven economy.
