A girl was kidnapped by a man in broad daylight in Bihar’s Darbhanga on Tuesday. The incident was captured in a CCTV.
The girl was returning home from her father’s shop when a man, identified as Hizbul Rehman alias Arju, forcefully made her sit on his bike and took her away.
In the CCTV footage, three girls are seen walking together when a girl with a child approaches them. They all stop and talk for a while when a man arrives on a bike. He initially rides past them and stops a short distance away. The girl with the child then walks ahead, ignoring the man, but he starts riding his bike alongside her. In another clip, the girl is seen running away with the child, and the man then chases her on his bike. He intercepts her and, after a brief interaction, forcibly lifts her and places her in front of him on the bike before fleeing the scene. The small child, left behind, is seen running and eventually disappears from the frame.
The girl’s father, Rajkumar Bhagat, has filed a written complaint at the Alinagar police station. He claims the girl had no prior relationship with the accused and that the man had been harassing the family for several days, including demands for extortion. Despite earlier complaints to the police, no preventive action was taken.
“Our daughter was coming back from our shop when Arju started following her. She tried to escape, but he forcibly took her on his bike. The CCTV captures everything. We’ve pleaded with the police, but no one is listening. If our daughter is not found within 24 hours, our whole family will end our lives,” Rajkumar Bhagat said.
The girl’s sister, Preeti Kumari, reiterated that there was no romantic relationship between her sister and the accused. She alleged that Arju had been intimidating them for some time. “He used to bully and extort her. That woman who spoke to my sister just before the abduction might also be involved. We want strict action.”
The family has voiced frustration over the lack of police response despite submitting clear video evidence and lodging an FIR. The incident has sparked local outrage, with community members accusing the police of negligence, particularly given the sensitive inter-community aspect of the case.
When contacted, Darbhanga SSP Jagunath Reddy acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “Considering the seriousness of the matter, we have sent the SDPO of the area for a thorough investigation. The facts will be confirmed after the inquiry. The SDPO will also address the media once the investigation is complete.”
