Season 2 of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi has started from where the previous season left off.
Not Ekta Kapoor, but her mom was the one to suggest Smriti Irani for ‘Tulsi’s role in KSBKBT
People have been left in awe with Smriti’s return as ‘Tulsi’ in the show, and the first episode got overwhelming responses from the viewers. Amid this, Ekta Kapoor revealed why she actually selected Smriti, and it was not her decision to do the same.
Before the show’s first episode premiered, Ekta Kapoor hosted a live session with Smriti Irani on IG, wherein she shared an interesting anecdote about the actress’s casting in the show. Ekta, in the video, said that it was her mom who first saw Smriti on another show. Ekta stated that her mom told her that she had seen this actress on another show and liked her very much. Ekta could be quoted as saying:
“Meri mom ne Smriti ko ek show mein dekha tha aur bola ke ye ek ladki maine show mein dekha hai… joh bahut hi khubsurat hai aur mujhe bahut pasand aayi hai.”

In the same video, Smriti mentioned that Ekta’s mom, Sobha, saw her during a show, which she was doing as a replacement for one of the director’s friends. Ekta went on to reveal that her mom was in awe of Smriti. She stated that her mom is a big fan of Bollywood actress, Twinkle Khanna and felt like Smriti looked like the actress, for which she told her daughter to cast her. Revealing more about the same, Ekta said:
“I don’t know what you did back then, but my mum was completely taken by you. She’s actually a big fan of Twinkle Khanna, and she called me saying, ‘There’s this girl who looks like Twinkle Khanna and she’s so beautiful—please cast her.’”
In the same video, Ekta further revealed that Smriti was slim, quiet and shy as she came for an audition, which went really well. Smriti, on the other hand, revealed that she vividly remembered that no one liked her audition except for Ekta, who was convinced by her work, and hired her as ‘Tulsi’ for Kyunki, and the rest is history. For the unversed, for season 2, Smriti reprised her role along with her co-star, Amar Upadhyay, who reprised the role of ‘Mihir’ on the show.

On July 29, 2025, the first episode of season 2 premiered on TV and JioHotstar. The first episode received some amazing reviews on social media. Along with showing the previous set-up, the first episode hit the right nostalgic sentiment with ‘Mihir’ and ‘Tulsi’s similar bond after 25 years. Some props, even the background music, remained the same, which took people back to 2000, when the first season premiered. While season 2 will bring new characters, the amalgamation of the previous season with modernity will surely unfold another dramatic chapter of this family drama.
