A case of medical negligence has emerged from in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, where a patient allegedly died after not receiving timely treatment as the doctor was asleep.

A viral video circulating on social media shows a junior doctor in Meerut’s Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College asleep with his feet on the table inside the emergency ward, while an injured patient, covered in blood, lies unattended on a stretcher nearby.

The incident, which took place late night on July 27-28, has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about the state of emergency medical care in one of western Uttar Pradesh’s largest government hospitals.

The patient has been identified as Sunil, a resident of Hasanpur village. According to his family, Sunil was hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road and sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to LLRM Medical College’s emergency department but was allegedly left untreated as the attending doctors were asleep. His family claims Sunil was treated as an “abandoned patient” and eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Responding to public outcry and the viral video, the college administration has taken swift action. Dr R C Gupta, Principal of LLRM Medical College, confirmed the suspension of two junior doctors—Dr Bhupesh Kumar Rai from the Orthopedics Department and Dr Aniket—who were on duty at the time of the incident.

“A video had gone viral in which it was claimed that an accident victim was seeking help in the emergency ward while the junior doctors were asleep. Taking immediate cognisance, both doctors have been suspended, and a three-member inquiry committee has been formed. The committee will submit its report within three days,” Dr Gupta said.

A formal notification has also been issued by the college confirming the disciplinary action and stating that the incident occurred in the plaster room of the emergency department around 1 am.

The incident has triggered an outpouring of anger on social media, with users demanding strict action against those responsible and calling for systemic reforms in emergency healthcare at government hospitals.

“This is not just negligence—it’s criminal indifference,” one user posted, while others questioned whether patients could trust public health institutions if emergency wards failed to function responsibly during critical hours.

While the administration has promised action, the final decision will depend on the findings of the inquiry committee.
