Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner issues, Mayday call after a scary engine malfunction
In an eerie similarity to the Air India flight that crashed within seconds of takeoff in Ahmedabad, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner also suffered a similar pattern. Within seconds of take-off, the pilot noticed engine failure as it was en route to it’s destination. The pilot, without ignoring the signals, immediately sent out a Mayday call and reported the engine problem.
The incident came a month after the horrific Air India crash, which was headed to London’s Gatwick Airport, and it crashed within moments of taking off from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad airport. It was the fatal crash of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and killed around 260 people. Talking about the United Airlines flight, it was heading to Munich when its left engine failed. According to reports, the aircraft flew in circles for some time to release fuel before safely landing back at the airport.
The left engine of the flight failed at an altitude of around 5,000 feet, shortly after takeoff. The pilots notified the air traffic controllers, and immediately emergency return procedures were followed. As per data from FlightAware, the United Airlines aircraft remained in the air for about 2 hours and 38 minutes after the ‘Mayday’ call was issued. The aircraft continued to circle northwest of Washington in a holding pattern to safely dump fuel before the emergency landing back at Washington Dulles Airport.
The report suggested that the pilots, after dumping the fuel, took permission to land using an Instrument Landing System approach on Runway 19 Centre. The landing was safely done despite the engine failure. After which the plane could not move on its own and had to be towed off the runway. The reports stated that the plane is still on the ground, and thankfully, no injuries were reported
