The father of NYPD officer Didarul Islam suffered a stroke after learning his only son was killed in Monday evening’s mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. 36-year-old Islam was one of four victims fatally shot by gunman Shane Tamura inside a Park Avenue office building.
According to The New York Post, Islam’s cousin said the officer’s father collapsed after hearing the news and was rushed to the hospital.
The tragedy has also left his family devastated, with his pregnant wife also hospitalised from the shock. She is eight months pregnant with the couple’s third child.
Islam was working off-duty as a private security guard at a 44-story Park Avenue office building when the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, opened fire.
The shooter killed Islam and three other civilians before taking his own life on the 33rd floor. A fifth victim remains hospitalised.
Originally from Bangladesh, Islam had served with the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx since 2021. He leaves behind two young children and a grieving family now reeling from compounded tragedy.
City officials, including Mayor Eric Adams, hailed Islam as a hero who “gave his life protecting others.” US President Donald Trump also issued a statement mourning the officer’s death and praising the NYPD’s bravery.
The shooting has left New York City in shock, as more details emerge about Tamura’s movements and motives.
