NEW DELHI: The debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha on Monday turned intense when NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule countered BJP’s Tejasvi Surya, who claimed that Jawaharlal Nehru “had a stated policy that India did not require an army”.Surya claimed Nehru had no plans for the modernisation of the army and that he relied on the police for security purposes.“At the very beginning of our Independence, at the dawn of this nation as an Independent country, Pandit Nehruji had a state policy that India did not require an army. Nehruji said this to General Lockhart that no plans for the modernisation of the army are required and that India’s policy is ahimsa (non-violence)…we don’t need the army, the police will do its job,” the Bengaluru South MP told Lok Sabha during the debate.Lashing out at Tesjasvi Surya, Spuriya Sule objected to the remark as an “insult to thousands and lakhs of Indian force and armies and their families who have stood so that you and I can be safe”. “I would like to tell Tejasvi Surya and put it on record, he said that Jawaharlal Nehruji, the first Prime Minister of India, never encouraged the defence forces and we have never done anything, this is the first time India has done exceptionally well in its armed forces. He has not only insulted thousands and lakhs of Indian force and armies and their families who have stood so that you and I can be safe,” the Baramati MP said. She further said: “I object to the statement that he has made…Tejasvi Surya, if you haven’t read history, then read it… When it comes to the country, the country comes first, then the state, then the party, then the family… When we got a call from Kiren Rijiju, he just told me on the phone that Supriya, you will have to give 10 days for the country… It was the greatness of the Prime Minister that he showed faith in the opposition leaders to lead the delegations... At the all-party meeting, the Congress party was the first to say that the Congress party and the entire opposition will stand with Narendra Modi’s government with full strength.”
