In just a few days, Chappell Roan‘s “The Subway” will no longer be underground. More than a year after she first debuted the ballad at Gov Ball 2024, the pop star has announced that her new song has a release date at last — and it’s coming sooner than you think.

In a Monday (July 28) post on Instagram, Roan shared the track’s apparent cover art — a photo of herself buried underneath tresses upon tresses of her own red hair — and simply wrote, “The Subway out July 31 8pm EST.”

The announcement comes just a few weeks after fans spotted the Missouri native filming what appeared to be a music video for “The Subway.” In photos taken from the shoot, Roan — similar to the song’s artwork — sported absurdly long, Rapunzel-style hair while singing atop a fire escape and dragging behind a taxi cab.

An official release date for “The Subway” has been a long time coming, with Roan often performing the New York City-themed heartbreak anthem at her live shows after first premiering it during her Gov Ball set (for which she dressed up as the Statue of Liberty, green body paint and all). It’ll follow March’s “The Giver,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the musician’s 2024 breakout hit “Good Luck, Babe!”

But while fans now have a new song to look forward to, it’ll likely be some time before Roan follows up 2023’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess with a new LP. Just four days prior to unveiling the release date for “The Subway,” the singer announced plans to play a handful of pop-up shows in New York City, Kansas City and Pasadena, Calif., noting that she “wanted the chance to do something special before going away to write the next album.”
