Congress leader and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi has strongly refuted the allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that link his wife to Pakistan’s ISI.
In an in-depth interview with India Today TV anchor, Preeti Cahudhary, Gogoi slammed the accusations as baseless and part of a broader “smear campaign” by the BJP aimed at defaming opponents and diverting public attention.
When asked about the ISI allegations that have routinely surfaced in Assam’s political discourse, Gogoi responded sharply, saying, “Well, what would the BJP be without defamation and mudslinging? You know, it’s their bread and butter.”
He further added that such tactics are not new, citing a pattern of targeted attacks by the BJP. “Have they not cast aspersions on Congress politicians before? They’ve accused someone of murder. They’ve accused someone of being anti-national. This is bread and butter. Propaganda, smear campaigns, mudslinging, defamation, you know, disregarding a woman’s character is second nature,” he said.
Gogoi stressed that such attempts by the ruling party reflect deep-rooted insecurities. “I feel like, you know, these are smear campaigns which kind of hide an insecurity, a deeper insecurity within the BJP. And in order to mask that, you know, they do this smear campaign,” he said.
The MP also addressed Sarma’s claim that former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi sidelined him in Congress due to Gaurav’s entry into politics. Responding to this, the Congress MP said, “Which just shows his obsession since that day. He’s just been using my name and creating false narratives around me ever since my first entry into politics.”
