Zohran Mamdani‘s social media hot streak continues, as his latest viral post sees the Democratic Party’s candidate for the New York City mayoral election link up with Staten Island icons the Wu-Tang Clan.
In a tweet posted to X on Thursday, Mamdani is seen attending a recent Wu-Tang gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden as the guest of former congressman Jamaal Bowman. In the clip, Mamdani is seen mingling with rather shocked concertgoers. He also meets with various members of Wu-Tang, including Inspectah Deck and U-God, as well as Run the Jewels‘ Killer Mike and El-P and The Lox’s Sheek Louch, Styles P and Jadakiss. A clearly star-struck Mamdani, a former rapper himself, also has a lengthy conversation about the cost of living crisis with Wu-Tang’s de facto leader, RZA.
Mamdani, a shock winner of the Democratic primary election for New York mayor, has won praise and garnered hundreds of thousands of new followers through his campaign’s expert use of social media, graphic design, merch and viral multilingual, multicultural and very New York-centric vertical videos, with the Wu-Tang video following the keep-things-local vibe. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June, the campaign’s graphic designer explained the striking visuals used by Mamdani that have incorporated elements of Bollywood design among other design cues.
In his other video clips, Mamdani is seen campaigning man-on-the-street style in dozens of previously overlooked New York neighborhoods as well as speaking in different languages, including Bengali, Hindi and Spanish. A video of Mamdani walking the length of Manhattan and talking to voters a few days before the primary particularly struck a chord and garnered almost 90,000 likes and 15 million views on X.
Mamdani’s innovative and entertaining videos, which helped him surge from one percent in the polls in February to 56 percent by July’s primary, have garnered millions of views on social media and prompted other candidates, including his rivals, to imitate his personable style.
