The language debate triggered tensions in a Navi Mumbai college after a group of students allegedly assaulted a classmate for distributing a wedding invitation written in Marathi.

The incident took place in a college in Vashi, where a simple gesture turned into a violent scuffle. According to reports, some non-Marathi students objected to receiving a wedding card in Marathi, which led to an altercation. The situation escalated, and one 20-year-old Marathi student was allegedly beaten with a hockey stick.

The issue has since taken a political turn. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) intervened, demanding strict action against the accused. MNS leader Gajanan Kale met with the Vashi police and submitted a complaint.

MNS alleged that the clash was not just an isolated fight but an example of the larger Marathi vs non-Marathi conflict brewing in educational institutions.

“If MPs like Nishikant Dubey are fuelling such controversies, it is clear that the dispute has now reached colleges,” claimed Gajanan Kale while addressing the media.

The party insists that action must be taken to ensure the safety and academic well-being of Marathi students, condemning the violent backlash over a language-based disagreement.
