It has been a month since the unexpected demise of businessman Sunjay Kapur, ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. Sunjay and Karisma’s high-profile divorce made headlines when they separated in 2016 after much drama and a publicised fallout. But even after nine years, their turbulent relationship continues to resurface time and again. Now, their close friend and filmmaker, Suneel Darshan, spoke up about their ‘abrupt’ marriage and why it didn’t work out. 

Suneel Darshan says Karisma Kapoor’s decision to marry Sunjay Kapur was ‘abrupt’

In a recent conversation with Vicky Lalwani, filmmaker Suneel Darshan opened up about his close friend, Karisma Kapoor, and her turbulent relationships, which he has witnessed from up close. When asked whether he had contacted Karisma following Sunjay’s demise, the filmmaker shared how he had seen them together from the very first day. Hinting at their tumultuous married life, the filmmaker said:

“We’ve exchanged this thing… I’ve known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I’ve known exactly… some things just need to be buried.”

Karisma Kapoor was once deeply in love with Abhishek Bachchan, long before he and Aishwarya Rai were a thing. In fact, the duo was engaged, and Abhishek’s mother, Jaya Bachchan, was seen welcoming Karisma into the family in public. However, things didn’t work out, and their engagement was called off. Not long after her broken engagement, Karisma decided to marry businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003.

Speaking about Karisma’s decision to marry Sunjay, Suneel Darshan revealed that the decision was rather abrupt. Now that he thinks about the way things worked out, the filmmaker believes it had something to do with their fate, and it was destiny that had brought them together at that time. In his words:

“I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars — stars-the stars… One didn’t know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen.”

Sunil and Karisma’s friendship spans decades, and the former has witnessed the actress through the highs and lows of her relationship history. Suneel knew that the actress desired a simple marriage where she could spend time at home and enjoy a peaceful life. However, when she married the late Delhi-based businessman, she was thrown into a lavish world with a grand mansion and an endless array of cars – a culture and lifestyle that did not quite suit her. 

Sunjay Kapur’s extravagant lifestyle had transformed Karisma into a trophy wife rather than the partner she had envisioned. Suneel believes this may have contributed to the marriage’s failure over time, despite them sharing two children. He shared:

“She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn’t the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home… I think that was where the problem came. That’s what I heard. She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture, and she wasn’t fitting into it… she was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn’t her world.”

After being married for eleven years, Karisma and Sunjay separated in 2014, and their divorce was finalised in 2016. In an old interview with Reddif, Randhir Kapoor revealed that their wedding was an arranged marriage, but they had met beforehand, and the alliance was arranged through their mutual friends. Karisma and Sunjay have two children, Kiaan and Samaira.
