Recently, the small town of Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram, which is known for its silk sarees and traditional temples, has found itself in the middle of an unexpected headline. Social media platforms, multiple reports and data are calling this town as the ‘cheating capital of India’. As per June 2025 data, this city, Kanchipuram, which was at rank 17 at one point, has left behind cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Pune, to be ranked as 1st.

Kanchipuram is ranked at no. 1 in extramarital signups

Kanchipuram is a town in Tamil Nadu, which has become the number one city in India for extramarital signups on a dating platform, Ashley Madison. This platform is for people who are married or in a relationship and they are looking to date another individual secretly (in filmy words, this is for all the ‘Rahul’s who have their ‘Tina’ but still wish for an ‘Anjali’). According to a June 2025, report by Ashley Madison, people from Kanchipuram have been recorded the most.

Ranking on this platform is not done just by signups but also by how active a person is. Till last year, Kanchipuram was at number 17, but within a year, it jumped to the top spot, leaving behind cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Since Kanchipuram is a small town, even a smaller number of active users makes a difference and that is probably what has happened. According to the list made by India Today, Kanchipuram tops the list with being at number 1, whereas Jaipur comes at number 20.

Why is the infidelity rate so high?

It is very surprising to see such a religious and spiritual city as number 1 in the list of infidelity rates. One of the possible reasons for this could be the growing access of the internet and social media, which is making it easy for people to connect secretly. Another reason could be the dissatisfaction people are facing in their marriages, including limited freedom and apart from heading for divorce, cheating looks like a better option. Another reason can be one partner is bored of the relationship and wants to explore more.
