Sanjana Sanghi is celebrating a poignant milestone as Dil Bechara completes five years since its release on July 24, 2020. The film, which marked her debut as a lead actress, also starred the late Sushant Singh Rajput and was helmed by casting director-turned-filmmaker Mukesh Chhabra. Based on John Green’s bestselling novel ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, the film struck an emotional chord with viewers across the country, becoming a cultural moment during the height of the pandemic.
Sanjana Sanghi marks 5 years of Dil Bechara: “Nothing prepares you for being a lead actor”
The film not only introduced Sanjana in a leading role but also showcased her depth as a performer. Her portrayal of Kizie, a young girl battling a terminal illness, was nuanced and heartfelt – imbued with quiet strength, vulnerability, and relatability. Audiences lauded her chemistry with Sushant Singh Rajput, which added to the emotional heft of the story.
Recalling her first day on set, Sanjana shared a personal anecdote about filming a now-iconic scene. “It was the scene where Kizie walks in and declares to her Mum, ‘I hate Sandesh.’ I’d spent a year prepping, immersing myself in Kizie’s Bengali dialect, her chronic illness, and her Jamshedpur roots. But I guess, nothing can truly prepare you for being a lead actor,” she admitted.
Sanjana further explained how, despite years of experience in the industry through cameos and ads since age 13, this was an entirely different challenge. “Though I’d been on sets since Rockstar… this was a whole new level of responsibility. The entire story rested on my shoulders, demanding 200% effort every moment. Mukesh and Sushant guided me through it all.”
The actress also shared insights into her dynamic with director Mukesh Chhabra. “Dil Bechara was a unique double debut for Mukesh Chhabra and me. Mukesh literally sparked my acting career, spotting me in school in 2010 and casting me in Rockstar. So, for him to then entrust me with the lead in his directorial debut meant the world,” she said, adding, “Navigating our firsts together created a truly special dynamic on set.”
Five years on, Dil Bechara remains a defining moment in Sanjana Sanghi’s career and a deeply emotional memory for fans of Sushant Singh Rajput. Her journey continues to evolve, but her debut performance stands as a reminder of the promise she brought to Indian cinema.
