Mohit Suri’s latest directorial venture Saiyaara has scripted history, not just at the box office this year but also in the filmmaker’s own career. The romantic drama starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has emerged as Suri’s highest-grossing film to date, collecting a phenomenal Rs. 155.75 crore nett in India. In doing so, Saiyaara has shattered the previous records held by his earlier blockbusters, setting a new benchmark for the filmmaker known for his emotionally rich and musically driven cinema.
Prior to Saiyaara, Mohit Suri’s highest grosser was the 2014 action-romance Ek Villain, which had amassed Rs. 105.62 crore during its theatrical run. With Saiyaara now clocking Rs. 50.13 crore more, it has surpassed Ek Villain by a whopping 47.5%, a staggering growth considering Saiyaara was headlined by two newcomers and released without the advantage of a franchise or major star power.
Suri’s earlier romantic hit Aashiqui 2, which became a musical phenomenon in 2013 and introduced a new wave of love stories in Bollywood, had collected Rs. 78.42 crore. Saiyaara has now more than doubled that figure, registering an impressive 98.5% increase, solidifying its status as a generational hit that resonates deeply with today’s youth audience.
Even more significantly, Saiyaara has performed considerably better than Suri’s other commercially successful titles in the last decade. His 2017 film Half Girlfriend collected Rs. 60.30 crore, while Malang (2020), a stylish action-thriller, ended its run at Rs. 58.99 crore. Both films featured established stars and wide marketing campaigns, yet Saiyaara has managed to eclipse them by 158.3% and 164% respectively.
Going further back, Suri’s early hit Murder 2 (2011) had minted Rs. 47.90 crore at the domestic box office. Compared to that, Saiyaara has registered a jaw-dropping 225% jump, showcasing how far the filmmaker has come both in scale and box office prowess.
What makes this feat particularly remarkable is that Saiyaara achieved these numbers in a competitive market landscape, without the support of extended holidays or an existing IP. Its massive success is driven by a deeply resonant storyline, a chartbuster soundtrack, and Mohit Suri’s signature directorial finesse—proving yet again that romance, when done right, can still capture the heart of a nation.
For Suri, Saiyaara not only reaffirms his reputation as Bollywood’s go-to storyteller for emotionally intense love stories but also marks a career milestone that places him firmly among the industry’s top-performing directors. With more eyes now on what he does next, the bar has undoubtedly been raised.
