Despite having carved a space for herself in Bollywood over the years, actor Nushrratt Bharuccha continues to face the harsh realities that come with being a woman in a male-dominated industry. In a recent candid interview with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, the Chhorii 2 actor highlighted the persistent gender disparities that exist both on and off the sets — from work opportunities to basic amenities.

Nushrratt Bharuccha calls out casual sexism in the industry: “Hero’s vanity van has better washrooms”

“Men Get More Opportunities After a Hit”

Nushrratt began by speaking about the imbalance in professional opportunities post-success. “As soon as a guy delivers a hit, no matter if he is an insider or an outsider, he will get five new options immediately. But women have to keep struggling,” she said, adding that the struggle to land substantial projects continues for women even after a major breakthrough. Reflecting on her own career journey since Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), the actor noted that female leads often don’t get the same volume of offers as their male counterparts.

“Can I Use the Hero’s Vanity Van?”

The disparity isn’t limited to roles or scripts. Nushrratt revealed that even facilities like vanity vans reflect the unequal treatment. “There have been times when I went around asking, ‘Can I use the hero’s vanity van for 5 minutes? He’s not here anyway. Can I use the washrooms?’ Because they are nicer than mine,” she recalled. Though she never voiced her frustration at the time, she silently promised herself to work her way up to the point where such basic privileges would come by default.

“This Is the Place Given to Me”

Speaking about an international flight experience where she was offered a seat in business class by friends but declined, Nushrratt shared how she made a conscious choice to respect the position assigned to her at the time. “I said, ‘I won’t come because this is the place that was given to me. But I will come to a place where I will fly business class and they will book my tickets with the production house’s money, not mine.’ I have managed to make that happen,” she affirmed.

“I Was Crying Alone After My Biggest Hit”

The actor also opened up about a particularly difficult period in her career. She revealed that after delivering what she called the biggest hit of her career, her then-management agency dropped her. “My manager called me for a coffee and said, ‘Sorry, we have to let you go.’ Though I tried to control my emotions, I started crying as they were giving out reasons,” she shared. The following two years were workless, with no team and no clarity on her next move. “People thought I was being cautious with my choices, but the fact was, I was crying, without a team and a support system,” she added.
