Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, marked a return to romantic storytelling in Hindi cinema, featuring expressive visuals, an emotional soundtrack, and a focus on performance-driven narrative.
Making of Saiyaara’s ‘Dhun’: “You will see reflections of Mohit Suri’s own life on screen,” says Mithoon
In a recent video released by YRF, director Mohit Suri spoke about the making of Saiyaara’s song ‘Dhun’, alongside composer and lyricist Mithoon.
In the video, Mohit Suri opened up about the significance of the song ‘Dhun’ in Saiyaara, explaining how it plays a key role in introducing the lead character. Emphasizing its importance, he said, “The first song in the film which introduces essentially the character of my lead hero in the film has been this song called ‘Dhun’. It’s their first song, the first time they sing a song, it had to be a special song and I couldn’t depend on anyone more than who I can depend my life with is Mithoon.”
Reflecting on his collaboration with Mohit Suri, Mithoon shared how the director’s deep-rooted belief in the power of melody inspired him during the making of ‘Dhun’. He said, “What inspired me at that point of time was when I was hearing Mohit, is that something that he has actually believed in — one melody can actually change the world. Tomorrow, if he needs, say, a melody from African folk music, I would not be surprised if I know that he’s traveled all the way to the forest of Africa searching for that melody.”
Speaking about Mithoon’s deep connection to the music, Mohit Suri highlighted the power of his lyrics and the emotion he brings to the composition. Praising his work on the song ‘Dhun’, Suri said, “You know the lines of ‘Ye main daawa nahi kar raha, Koi Taj Mahal hai mera, Naam ki chand deewarein hain… tere iss ghar ko sajaane ke liye hai yahi ek dhun’ were brilliant lines written by you. I always tell him, you played the song. Now you sing it. Because the emotion that the composer has is so close to what the song actually is supposed to be.”
Mithoon shared his thoughts on Mohit Suri’s personal approach to filmmaking, pointing out how deeply the director’s own experiences influence his work. He said, “Mohit Suri is a filmmaker you will always see reflections of his own life on screen. I’ve seen his actors do scenes, and I was like, he was good, but he was copying you on screen, yeah? You know, which is how personal he takes his cinema.”
Mithoon also recalled the initial feedback ‘Dhun’ received from Mohit Suri’s wife, Udita Goswami, highlighting her keen musical ear. “I remember Udita’s feedback. She actually pointed out that in the first hearing, and she told Mohit that you not only have a great song, you have a great antara. She was very fond of that, and that’s the first feedback I got, because the first person he plays a song to is Udita, obviously,” he said.
