As Kriti Sanon celebrates her birthday week, it also marks the fourth anniversary of her film Mimi, which won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. The 2021 release earned Sanon widespread critical acclaim and played a key role in shaping her career as a leading actor in Indian cinema.

Speaking about casting Kriti in the titular role, director Laxman Utekar said, “She was always the first choice. To play Mimi, I wanted someone who had depth, and who was comfortable to work with. Because this was such a sensitive character, I wanted to have a rapport with the actor playing it. I wanted a certain mindset.”
Explaining his decision further, Utekar added, “While working with her in Luka Chuppi, I had experienced that Kriti had so much depth. She is real, first of all. She is not fake. She has a real personality. She is hardworking. If you see her graph in Mimi, I mean, the film starts with this bubbly Mimi and by the time it ends, she is the mother of a four-year-old child. Her performance was like a rollercoaster. We just wanted someone who had depth, who was real, and who was ready to work hard on it. And we knew Kriti had that talent in her and that she would kill it. And she did kill it.”
Mimi told the story of a young aspiring actress who agrees to become a surrogate for a foreign couple and ends up raising the child alone. The film was praised for its portrayal of motherhood, ethical complexities, and Kriti’s mature performance.
Since Mimi, Kriti has taken on a variety of roles, including in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, Crew, and a twin role in Do Patti. Her ability to switch genres and collaborate with different filmmakers has made her one of the most sought-after actresses in recent years.
As Mimi marks four years, the film stands out as a defining moment in Kriti’s filmography. Speaking of her current projects, the actress will next be seen in Tere Ishk Mein alongside Dhanush for the first time. Directed by Aanand L. Rai, the film is expected to be an intense romantic drama from the Raanjhanaa universe.
