The brutal killing of four University students in their off-campus home in Idaho in 2022 had left the world in shock. Claiming the lives of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen without any known reason, a mysterious killer had created headlines in the quiet college town of Moscow. However, after months-long investigation, it was found that Bryan Kohberger was the main culprit in the case. As he pleaded ‘guilty’ in a hearing held on July 23, 2025, his distance from his mother and sister in the courtroom became another talking point in the case.
Bryan Kohberger maintains cold silence with his mother and sister
Idaho quadruple murder case came to an end on July 23, 2025, when a 30-year-old Bryan was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences for claiming the lives of four students. In a hearing held at the Boise courtroom, Bryan was sentenced without any chance for parole, closing the high-profile case which first broke out in November 2022. The convict who was studying criminology at Washington State University was spared from a death sentence in the case after he pleaded guilty just three weeks before the last date.
However, what caught the attention of the onlookers during the hearing was not only the final judgement, but even the presence of Bryan’s mother, Maryann and sister, Amanda, who were brought in by public defender, Anne Taylor as his only family members present in the court. As per The New York Times report, Bryan maintained a distance and cold silence with his family, which left netizens surprised. After completing the hearing, he walked past them and left the courtroom without acknowledging their presence or saying a single word.
The news report further claimed that Bryan’s mother, Maryann, was seen ‘shuddering’ and ‘putting her head in her hands’ in an emotional moment. On the other hand, his sister, Amanda, seemed eager to keep her mother away from the press and left the courthouse quickly after the proceedings were completed. The New York Times alleged that Bryan gave a slight nod and smile to his mother, which could have been their only point of interaction. Meanwhile, Kim Cheeley, the grandmother of a victim, Madison Mogen, said:
“My heart aches for the kids’ roommates, and the families of the other victims and also the family of the perpetrator.”

What was the final judgement in the Idaho Murders case?
Bryan Kohberger has been ordered to pay USD 270,000 in fines and civil penalties in the case and was sentenced to four lifetimes in prison. Before beginning that, he would undergo a two-week evaluation, following which he will be sent into a maximum-security facility, mostly in Idaho. But he could be moved out of the state due to safety issues. However, the investigation of the case has been left with many unanswered questions because the reasons why Bryan committed the crime are still unknown. Moscow police Cpl. Brett Payne addressed a news conference and said:
“The evidence suggested that there was a reason that this particular house was chosen. What that reason is, we don’t know.”
