Pedro Pascal prefers to have facial hair for his acting roles, and he has a reason.

The actor recently appeared on LADbible‘s “Agree To Disagree” video series with his The Fantastic Four: First Steps co-star Vanessa Kirby, where they were asked to debate at one point whether mustaches are sexier than beards.

That’s when The Last of Us star opened up about his preferences for facial hair when appearing onscreen after seeing himself clean-shaven as the villainous Maxwell Lord in 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, starring Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot.

“I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me,” Pascal said. “In Wonder Woman 1984, I was so appalled by the way I look. I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary.”

While he’s thankful he was able to have a beard in Fantastic Four (though he did receive some criticism from fans as they pointed out Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic doesn’t have facial hair in Marvel Comics), the Materialists actor admitted that if producers and director Matt Shakman “asked me to be clean shave for Fantastic Four and insisted, then I would’ve done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie.”

The new Fantastic Four, which takes place in a retro-futuristic 1960s setting, also stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn. The pic follows the superhero group as they defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), while trying to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond. The film hits theaters on July 24.
