A Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, Humayun Kabir, has announced the formation of a new political party, marking a significant political development ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Kabir confirmed that his party will be launched on January 1, 2026, and will contest in 50 constituencies across the state.

Kabir, who represents MLA Bharatpur constituency, has been a vocal critic of the TMC’s district leadership. His repeated defiance of the party line in recent months led the TMC high command to caution him and issue a show-cause notice.

“My new party will not be confined to Murshidabad alone,” Kabir said. “It will field candidates in 50–52 seats across Murshidabad, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and parts of Nadia.”

The Bharatpur MLA, known for his influence in the minority-dominated constituency, appears to be positioning himself as a key player in North Bengal’s political landscape.

Despite his open rebellion, Kabir clarified that his criticism is directed solely at the district leadership. “I hold no animosity towards Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee,” he said.
