Filmmaker David Dhawan’s comic caper Haseena Maan Jeeyagi completed 26 years last month. Despite the Govinda and Sanjay Dutt starrer being almost three decades old, it continues to make people laugh. In fact, the film has acquired a cult following over the years and is considered one of Dhawan’s most hilarious works.

Haseena Maan Jaayegi was also the first step into film production for producer Smita Thackeray. Her first outing turned out to be a winning one. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, she looked back at the comedy and its undying popularity.
Thackeray said they never planned the film to become so big. “Sometimes in life, certain unplanned moments turn out to be the most significant,” she said. “They bring immense joy and stay with us forever. Even after 26 years, when I meet people who’ve loved the film, their happiness becomes my reward. That lasting impact and their happy reaction is what truly matter.”
Haseena Maan Jaayegi told the story of two naughty brothers Sonu (Govinda) and Monu (Sanjay Dutt) and their mischievous activities, which become a headache for their father Amirchand (Kader Khan). The film is about how the two brothers fall in love with Ritu (Karisma Kapoor) and Pooja (Pooja Batra) and the chaos that follow.
When asked the reason for choosing such a crazy comedy as her first film, Thackeray said, “Comedy has always been my first choice, both to create and to watch. It’s one of the toughest genres for any actor to perform, but fortunately, we had Govinda, who brought heart and soul to the role. People turn to comedy to forget everything for those three hours and simply enjoy. That’s why I continue to choose this genre.”

Thackeray is also all praise for David Dhawan. She still remembers the experience of listening to the final narration from him. “David Dhawan is a master of comedy films,” she said. “His process of finalizing a story is unique; he combines collective inputs and real-life character quirks to create magic. When it’s a David ji and Govinda ji collaboration, the outcome is bound to be fresh, new, and entertaining. I still remember the final story narration. It was hilarious. At that moment, I felt happiness, satisfaction, and a strong belief in the film’s success.”
After Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Smita Thackeray went onto produce another Govinda comedy in the form of Sandwich (2006), which was directed by Anees Bazmee. Sharing about her friendship with the actor, she said, “My rapport with Chi Chi has always been excellent. He is like family to us. That bond remains strong even today. His son is a friend of my son Aaishwary, and Sunita Bhabhi is a truly sweet and joyful soul.”
