New Delhi, July 20: A 25-year-old UPSC aspirant died by suicide in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, a locality known for its coaching centres and student population. The victim, identified as Tarun Thakur, hailed from Jammu and had been preparing for the civil services examination.

According to police, Tarun’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented accommodation. A handwritten note was recovered from the scene in which he reportedly stated that he was taking the extreme step on his own and did not hold anyone responsible for his decision.

The incident came to light after the landlord alerted the police when Tarun did not respond to repeated knocks on the door. Authorities have sent the body for post-mortem and have also informed Tarun’s family.

Preliminary investigation suggests the student had been under pressure due to academic stress, though no specific reason was mentioned in the note. Police are continuing their inquiry and speaking with acquaintances to gather more details.

The tragic death has once again drawn attention to the mental health challenges faced by competitive exam aspirants in high-pressure environments like Old Rajinder Nagar.

This came just two days after a 21-year-old student was found dead inside his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in a suspected case of suicide. This is the seventh suicide case reported at IIT-Kharagpur in the last three years.

The student, identified as Ritam Mondal from Kolkata, was found hanging inside his room at around 11.30 am on Friday. What led the IIT student to take the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.
