Vicky Kaushal’s father and renowned action director, Sham Kaushal, was devastated when doctors informed him of his cancer diagnosis, stating that his chances of survival were very low. The news was so overwhelming that he even contemplated ending his life at one point.
Sham Kaushal opens up about suicidal thoughts after learning he had Cancer; says, “When I have to die anyway, why not now”
In a podcast conversation with Aman Aujla, Sham Kaushal revealed that upon hearing the diagnosis, his initial reaction was to consider jumping from the third floor of the hospital. Recalling a surgery he underwent in 2003, he shared that it was after this operation that he learned he had cancer. He noted that the atmosphere in the hospital room was filled with worry, and the doctor had even told him that his chances of survival were slim.
Sham said, “They informed me in the evening, and at night, I had this wild thought of jumping from the third floor of the hospital where my room was situated. I didn’t make the decision out of weakness, but thought, when I have to die anyway, why not now? But I couldn’t move due to the pain post-surgery.”
In his hospital room, Sham shared that he prayed for God to take him then and there, feeling he had lived a good life. After this emotional self-reflection, Sham said he is no longer afraid of dying.
He added, “After that conversation, I overcame my fear of death. The next morning, I felt hopeful, believing that with a few surgeries, I would be fine. That experience changed my perspective on life and strengthened my willpower. Over the next year, I underwent multiple tests and surgeries, but I stayed strong. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread throughout my body. I had prayed to God for 10 more years, and today, it’s been 22 years. That period transformed my life. I met many good people, received meaningful work, my children have thrived, and I have grown as a person.”
Sham spent many years working as a stuntman before earning his big break as an independent action director in 1990. With a career spanning over four decades, he has contributed to films in both Bollywood and Hollywood. His debut as an action director was for the Malayalam film Indrajaalam (1990).
In Bollywood, Sham has served as an action director for films like Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), PK (2014), Padmaavat (2018), Sanju (2018), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and Simmba (2018). He has also contributed to international projects, including the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
