Director Aziz Mirza’s Yes Boss, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, completes 28 years on July 18, having released in 1997 to both critical and commercial acclaim. A breezy romantic comedy with an emotional undercurrent, the film marked a significant moment in Shah Rukh Khan’s early career and remains one of Mirza’s most beloved directorial ventures.
28 Years of Yes Boss: Aziz Mirza looks back at his iconic film with Shah Rukh
The story of Yes Boss was loosely inspired by Billy Wilder’s 1960 classic The Apartment, in which a young executive allows his apartment to be used by his boss for secret rendezvous with his mistresses. However, Mirza’s Indian adaptation took a slightly darker and more emotional tone, with Shah Rukh Khan playing the good-hearted but morally conflicted subordinate to Aditya Pancholi’s manipulative boss, set against the backdrop of corporate ambition and romantic entanglements. Yes Boss was some shades darker than The Apartment, but still blithe-spirited.
Aziz Mirza, Shah Rukh Khan, and Juhi Chawla formed a cherished creative trio in the 1990s, delivering a string of memorable films. Mirza directed Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), Yes Boss (1997), and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) — all of which starred SRK and Juhi. He later reunited with Shah Rukh for Chalte Chalte (2003) opposite Rani Mukerji.
However, his final film Kismat Konnection (2008) starred Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan, notably excluding Shah Rukh from the cast. Why the change? “Shah Rukh is like my own child. I can never move away from him,” says Aziz. “The only reason he wasn’t in Kismat Konnection is because the role required a young boy, fresh out of college. In fact, the moment Juhi heard the story, she said, ‘This sounds like a younger Shah Rukh.’ That’s how Shahid came into the picture.”
Mirza’s bond with Shah Rukh goes beyond professional collaborations. “He was like my bachcha from the very beginning,” Mirza says fondly. “We started with Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and then did Yes Boss together — both important films in the early phase of his career. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was, I believe, ahead of its time.”
Despite being seen as a filmmaker who played a crucial role in shaping SRK’s stardom, Mirza remains humble. “It’s wrong to say I helped his career. Everyone has their own destiny. Shah Rukh became a star overnight with Deewana. I remember they had already shot half the film with another actor. He came in late, and the rest is history. If that isn’t destiny, I don’t know what is.”
He concludes with warmth, saying, “I’ve done four films with Shah Rukh. One doesn’t need to keep working with someone to prove love. Some relationships go beyond the professional — Shah Rukh is certainly one of those.”
As Yes Boss turns 28, its legacy lives on — as does the cherished bond between Aziz Mirza and Shah Rukh Khan.
