When Ali Hazelwood’s novel, The Love Hypothesis, was released in 2021, it quickly became a must-read in the contemporary romance category. Originally, the book, which was inspired by Star Wars’ fiction, became a success with a unique fake dating story, a STEM dropout with interesting and relatable characters. Needless to say, the book stayed on The New York Times’ bestseller list for 10 months and was regarded as Amazon’s best romance novel in 2021. Several fans wanted to see the heartwarming plot on the big screen, and after a lot of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’, its film adaptation is finally in the making.
Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman will play the leads in The Love Hypothesis
Lili Reinhart was announced as the female lead in The Love Hypothesis by Deadline. Later, she took to her Instagram handle and confirmed the news that she will be playing ‘Olive Smith’, the awkward yet intelligent PhD student. Just a day later, the news portal confirmed that Nile actor, Tom Bateman, would play the role of ‘Dr. Adam Carlsen’. Talking about reaction to the news, Ali Hazelwood told Deadline:
“Elizabeth Cantillon, Claire Scanlon, and Lili Reinhart have all created, produced, or starred in works that I’m absolutely feral about. I am beyond honoured that they’re choosing to bring their talent to this project. Books and films are very different media, and I have complete trust in this brilliant team. I cannot wait to see the final product they’ll come up with.”
Tom Bateman’s casting is even more special for the long-time readers of the book. They are well aware that Ali took inspiration for the role of ‘Adam’ from Star Wars (the Reylo kind), Kylo Ren, which Adam Driver played. But the special part is that Tom Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, who played ‘Rey’.
Director, release date, and streaming platform for The Love Hypothesis
The big responsibility of bringing the fan-favourite modern romance to life will be in the hands of Claire Scanlon. She is known for directing Netflix’s Set It Up and has experience working on a popular rom-com, The People We Hate at the Wedding, and some episodes of Abbott Elementary and Loot. However, fans will have to wait for the film because there is no confirmation about the release date or timeline of the film. Officially, there is no word on whether the release would take place on a streaming giant or in theatres. However, since the cast has been confirmed, new updates might soon follow.
What is the plot of The Love Hypothesis?
There is no information about the official storyline of The Love Hypothesis, but we can expect it to be similar to the novel. The book follows the story of Olive, who has to fake date a bad-tempered but brilliant professor to persuade her friend into believing that she has moved on in her relationship. But the experiment soon creates real sparks with lab romance, conferences and a budding romance.
