Tech billionaire Elon Musk has slammed National Public Radio (NPR) CEO Katherine Maher, claiming she doesn’t believe in the truth in response to a recent CNN appearance and her past comments about truth and objectivity.Musk’s remarks came in reply to a social media post on X by US Senator John Kennedy, who shared a clip of Maher’s interview on CNN. In the interview, Maher responded to accusations of political bias against NPR by saying, “As far as the accusations that we’re biased, I’d stand up and say, Please show me a story that concerns you.”Reacting to the statement, Musk tweeted: “She literally doesn’t believe in the truth!” He also shared a link to a RealClearPolitics article highlighting Maher’s past remarks about truth during a 2022 TED Talk, when she was CEO of Wikipedia. In the TED Talk, Maher spoke about the complexity of truth in the modern world. She said, “Our reverence for the truth might be a distraction that is getting in the way of finding common ground and getting things done.” While she clarified that truth does exist and is important, she emphasized the idea that different people may experience different truths.“I’m certain that the truth exists for you. And probably for the person sitting next to you. But this may not be the same truth.”Critics, including Musk, have cited Maher’s comments as a sign that she takes a relative view of truth, raising concerns about her leadership at NPR. These concerns grew after the suspension of senior editor Uri Berliner, who wrote an essay for The Free Press accusing NPR of progressive political bias. The piece, titled “I’ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust,” detailed his concerns about the organization’s editorial direction.
