As the powerful family drama Sarzameen gears up for release on JioHotstar on July 25, debutant director Kayoze Irani is opening up about what made the experience unforgettable — directing his father, the legendary Boman Irani.

Produced by Dharma Productions in association with Adar Poonawalla, Sarzameen stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Vijay Menon, Kajol as Meher, and Ibrahim Ali Khan as Harman. Set against the emotional backdrop of a nation in conflict, the film explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the impossible choice between love for family and duty to the country.
But behind the camera, an equally touching story was unfolding — a father-son collaboration rooted in love, respect, and lots of laughter. Speaking about casting Boman Irani in a special appearance, Kayoze shared, “Someone once told me, ‘Your father is your good luck charm, whatever you do in life, make sure you do something with him.’ So when this role came up, even though it’s a special appearance and not the biggest role, I told him, ‘You’re doing this option.’ In fact, my mom was even more insistent than I was! Of course, he was on board without a second thought. But it definitely had its moments, because I think he was looking at me with two lenses: as a director and as his son.”
Kayoze further revealed the hilarious dynamics they shared on set, jokingly adding, “He directed me more than I directed him sometimes! He’d come to the monitor and say things like, ‘Did you get this moment?’ or ‘Watch this expression I did something there.’ I got full-on dad vibes on set, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
The emotional heart of Sarzameen mirrors the real-life emotional journey Kayoze and Boman Irani shared while working together. The film will stream in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, allowing audiences across India to experience this gripping and heartfelt story. Sarzameen is expected to be premiering on July 25 on JioHotstar — where patriotism and parenthood collide.
