However, recently, there have been speculations that all might not be well between the couple, and they might be heading for divorce. Now, in a podcast, they have addressed the rumours and shared what really is going on between the two.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have finally reacted to the divorce speculations. The couple appeared on Michelle’s podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, and dismissed all speculation about their separation. During the conversation, Barack joked about how Michelle brought him back, but also admitted that it was touch and go for a while. For the uninitiated, speculation surfaced after Michelle was conspicuously absent from several public events, including Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. It was only then that the rumours grew more intense.
In a conversation with IMO, Michelle Obama’s brother, Craig Robinson, began by stating how nice it was to have Michelle and Barack back in the same room. To this, Michelle responded with a humorous jab at the speculations and added, “I know, because when we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.” The trio continued the conversation, and Craig revealed how pervasive the rumours have gotten by sharing an incident where a complete stranger came up to him at the airport and asked him:
“What did he do?”
In the same conversation, Barack Obama admitted that he had been oblivious to the rumours and how bad they had been until someone mentioned them to him. However, it was Michelle who quickly put an end to the speculations and stated that she has never considered leaving Barack. She added that they have been through a lot together, both good and bad, and stated:
“I have never considered leaving my partner at any point during our marriage. My spouse has helped me grow as a person, and we have experienced many adventures and good times in addition to some really difficult times.”

Speculations about Michelle and Barack Obama’s divorce gained momentum after the former was absent from Trump’s inauguration. The world took it that something was wrong between them. Not only that, she also skipped the burial of former President Jimmy Carter in January 2025. However, she clarified that it was a personal choice rather than an indication of marital discord. She was quoted as saying:
“People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, so they had to assume my marriage was falling apart.”
