Nike has officially announced release details for Tom Sachs‘ highly anticipated Mars Yard 3.0, and if you want to purchase a pair you’re going to have to get active.
The Tom Sachs x Nikecraft Mars Yard 3.0 will require prospective customers to participate in a weekly series of “Summer Camp” challenges through a dedicated app. Points will be awarded for each challenge completed and will increase based on the number of consecutive days on which you log a challenge. Upon the end of the program, your position on the leaderboard will determine if you’re granted access to purchase the sneaker in September.
“Mars Yards have always been hard to get, and they’re always going to be hard to get,” Sachs said via statement. “If you want them, you’re going to have to work for them. Maybe not all of the challenges are for you. That’s OK. What matters is that you do what resonates. I can’t guarantee you will get the shoes, but I can promise your life will improve by participating in meaningful daily routines.”

As the third sneaker to release in Sachs’ much hyped Mars Yard series, the 3.0 iteration is upgraded with React foam and a carbon fiber shank. A natural rubber outsole is intended for better durability, while a TPU toe cap offers better protection. The upper also features a redesigned lacing system for a more inclusive fit, a TPU heel clip for stability and what’s being called an “unprecedented” silkscreen-printed Swoosh.
“At a glance, nothing about the Mars Yard 3.0 has changed from the previous iteration,” the artist said.
“But while this shoe looks like earlier Mars Yard footwear, it couldn’t be more different. Every single thing is completely new — the tooling, midsole, outsole, toe clip, heel clip and feel. Even the packaging, which looks like the previous version, is completely reengineered from scratch to be reusable.”
Sachs’ first Mars Yard released in 2012, and a number of improvements were made for the 2.0 version in 2017. A Mars Yard 2.5 then surfaced in 2020, but the only people who got to wear them were part of a wear test program that required them to return the sneaker at the end. On resale platforms such as StockX, the Mars Yard 1.0 and 2.0 have sold for as much as $13,000 and $7,000, respectively.
Those interested in the Tom Sachs x Nikecraft Mars Yard 3.0 can download the I.S.R.U. app through the Nikecraft website. The first set of challenges will go live on Thursday with new challenges added on a weekly basis through Aug. 29. Users who finish in a high enough position based on points will then be able to purchase the sneaker Sept. 5 for $275.
