In a significant breakthrough, the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have reached a series of agreements on key inter-state water issues during a meeting convened by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti in New Delhi. The meeting, attended by Chief Ministers Revanth Reddy of Telangana and N Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh, aimed to address long-standing disputes concerning river water management.
One of the major outcomes of the meeting was Andhra Pradesh’s acceptance of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s proposal to implement telemetry systems across all major water projects and reservoirs. This move is expected to enhance transparency and ensure accurate measurement of water usage across both states.
The two states also arrived at a consensus on the allocation of river management board offices. It was agreed that the Godavari River Management Board will be housed in Hyderabad, while the Krishna River Management Board will be located in Andhra Pradesh. This decision is seen as a step forward in institutionalising water-sharing mechanisms and addressing administrative bottlenecks.
In another key development, Andhra Pradesh consented to Telangana’s request to undertake immediate repair work on the Srisailam project, one of the most critical and shared hydroelectric and irrigation assets between the states.
To address unresolved matters, it was decided that a committee comprising officers and technical experts from both sides will be constituted within a week. This committee will examine all outstanding issues, including those related to water projects on the Krishna and Godavari river basins.
The meeting was described as cordial and constructive, with both governments reaffirming their commitment to resolving inter-state water disputes through dialogue and mutual cooperation.
