Filmmaker Mohit Suri, best known for directing romantic dramas like Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain, is gearing up for the release of his latest film, Saiyaara. Ahead of the premiere, Suri has voiced his strong support for director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for controversial hits like Kabir Singh and Animal. While Vanga’s films have often drawn criticism for their bold portrayal of flawed male protagonists, Mohit admitted that he is a fan of the filmmaker and enjoys his storytelling. He further added that it is often the audience that turns these films into controversies.

During a recent interview with Filmygyan, Mohit Suri became vocal with his admiration and support for Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who received severe backlash following the release of Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor. The Aashiqui 2 director said that the audience likes to paint Vanga’s films in a controversial light, while there are numerous films that have explored similar character flaws in the past. Drawing parallels between Vanga’s films and earlier intense dramas, Suri remarked:

“I love his films. Hum banate hai use controversial. Ye same kahani aap kisi gangster ke sath karo — Bhatt sahab ne kiya hai Sadak mein. We are from that school of cinema. Ram Gopal Varma has made such films too. Everyone has the right to make their films. You have a right to like it or not like it.”

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2019 film Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor, was the Hindi remake of his 2017 Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy, which featured Vijay Deverakonda in the lead. While both films were massive commercial successes, some viewers criticised Kabir Singh for being a near-exact replica of the original.

However, Mohit Suri believes there’s a ‘big difference’ between the two, describing Kabir Singh as more emotionally intense. Speaking about Animal, Mohit shared that he loved the film so much, he personally messaged Sandeep Reddy Vanga to express his admiration. He shared:

“Very few people think Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh have no difference. I feel there is a big difference between the two films. There is more emotion in the second part. I loved Animal. I messaged him during Animal that I am a Sandeed Reddy Vanga fan.”
